High Pressure Grinding Rolls

High pressure grinding mill is widely used in mining, cement, and chemical industries for hard ores, industrial minerals, and even diamond recovery.

A High-Pressure Grinding Roll (HPGR) is an energy-efficient crushing machine that uses two counter-rotating rollers to compress material, breaking it by inter-particle pressure while creating fine particles and internal micro-cracks for easier downstream grinding. It is widely used in mining, cement, and chemical industries for hard ores, industrial minerals, and even diamond recovery.

Two large rollers spin toward each other with very high force. Material falls between them and gets squeezed—not just cut or hit, but compressed until particles break against each other. This “layer-on-layer” crushing creates many fine particles and, more importantly, leaves tiny cracks inside the bigger pieces. Those cracks make the next grinding step (like in a ball mill) much easier and cheaper.

1. Hard and Abrasive Ores (Metals)

Iron ore (hematite, magnetite) – HPGR is widely used to pre-crush hard iron ores before pelletizing or further grinding.

Copper ore – both oxide and sulfide ores benefit from the micro-cracks, which improve leaching or flotation.

Gold ore – especially when the gold is locked inside hard quartz, HPGR helps liberate the particles without over-grinding.

Nickel, lead-zinc, and platinum ores – any tough metallic ore that needs fine liberation.

2. Non-Metallic Minerals (Industrial Minerals)

Limestone – for cement production, HPGR grinds limestone into a fine feed for the kiln.

Diamonds – In diamond mines, HPGR crushes kimberlitic ore gently enough to break the rock but not smash the diamonds.

Phosphate rock – used for fertilizers, HPGR reduces it to a consistent size.

Bauxite – before alumina refining, HPGR breaks down the sticky, moist bauxite effectively.

Talc, barite, and gypsum – softer materials also work well, as the machine can adjust pressure to avoid over-crushing.

3. Coal and Coke

Thermal or metallurgical coal can be pre-crushed for washing or coking. HPGR handles moist coal better than many traditional crushers.

4. Recycled and Waste Materials

Construction debris (concrete, asphalt) – for producing recycled aggregates.

Slags from steelmaking – HPGR liberates metal from slag, making recovery easier.
