1. Know the Rock
Hard rocks — granite, basalt, quartzite, and iron ore — have high compressive strength (over 150 MPa) and are highly abrasive. This means they will wear out parts faster than soft rock like limestone. For these materials, you need a crusher built tougher.
2. Match Feed Size to the Crusher
The maximum size of rock you feed in must be less than 85% of the crusher’s feed opening width. For example, if your biggest rock is 200mm, choose a crusher with an opening larger than 235mm. Oversized feed can crack liners and cause uneven wear.
3. Choose the Right Tooth Profile
For hard, large-feed primary crushing, choose coarse teeth (deep, widely spaced). For finer output, choose fine teeth.
Part 2: How Long Do Jaw Plates Last?
There’s no single answer — it depends on several factors.
Crushing granite with a standard Mn13 jaw plate: 800–1,200 hours
Crushing granite with Mn18: 500–900 hours
Crushing granite with Mn22: 700–1,200 hours
Crushing limestone: 1,500–2,000 hours (much longer)
So for hard rock, expect 500 to 1,200 hours of use, depending on your plate quality.
Part 3: Practical Tips to Make Plates Last Longer
1. Flip them. Many small crushers use symmetric jaw plates — when the bottom wears out, flip them upside down and use the fresh top half. This can nearly double plate life.
2. Feed evenly. Don’t dump all your rock in one spot. Spread it across the full width of the crushing chamber.
3. Match swing speed to rock. For hard rock like granite, reduce the swing frequency to 200–230 strokes per minute (instead of 250–280 for soft rock).
4. Check regularly. Replace plates when the tooth height wears down by more than 2/3 of the original height.
